"God,“ she says, "being poor is some kinda horse shit.”
"You said it.“ He goes back to his laptop and she moves things around in the sink for a moment, not actually washing any of the dishes, just staring out through the window.
"Maybe the police will catch him,” she says after a moment or two, looking around. “We gave them all the information they need to do it, right?”
Alex shrugs. “Depends how much they care,” he says. “Small town sheriff department like this… I dunno. It’s usually four people and a dog and I don’t think those guys have a dog so you’re just left with four guys.”
"They must be bored,“ she says, ”surely. I googled this town and there’s nothing happening here, the last murder was in nineteen sixty-two. Nineteen sixty-two!
"Why do you sound put off by that?” he says in amusement. She pulls a face at him.
"I’m not put off by it,“ she says with a huff, looking back at the dishes and going back to scrubbing them. "Okay, maybe I’m a little put off by it. It’s hard to find material to write from or make videos about when nothing is going on. It’s not conducive to the kind of work I do and the kind of inspiration I get. This town doesn’t even have a club, Alex! Not a gay club! It doesn’t have a straight club!”
"It’s a small town,“ Alex agrees with a nod, watching her over his laptop lid. "I doubt there’s a lot of non-straight people even in it.”
"There’s more than anyone realises,“ Dakota says firmly. "I bet most of them are just hiding in the closet afraid of their maiden aunts or whatever.”
